C3YFCL 2015 Season Well Underway, 333 Youth Registered

Southampton County, VA. Saturday, September 12 was opening day for the 2nd season of the Cover 3 Youth Football & Cheer League. 257 football players, 76 cheerleaders and 45 coaches have registered to participate in the 2015 season.

The Cover 3 Youth Football & Cheer League was founded in 2010 when the Foundation fielded teams in Fredericksburg, VA. For two seasons, the Cover 3 Tide traveled to the AYF National Championship in Orlando Florida. In 2012, the Tide took home the National Championship. In 2013, the Franklin Little League Board of Directors approached Cover 3 Foundation about taking over their league. Founder, Greg Scott grew up playing in the Franklin/Southampton Little League Football program and jumped at the chance to build an improved league.

In its first year, the League registered 347 football players, 107 cheerleaders, and 80 coaches. Under the Cover 3 Foundation the former little league organization expanded into 3 divisions and introduced flag football to the community. The league crowned champions in Flag, Midget, Junior and Teen tackle divisions. Lastly, 80 coaches received training on Heads-up tackling, 3 board members including the Player Safety Coach attended a Heads-up Course, and 12 coaches were certified through USA Football Heads-Up Level 1 Certification.

This season, the League continued to expand the outreach of youth recreation football by adding two new groups to the League. In addition to the returning groups of Holland Razorbacks, Courtland Tide and Sussex Green Machine, the Meherrin Pirates and Riverdale Chiefs were formed to complete the season team rosters. Each group fields a team in the Flag, Midget Tackle and Junior Tackle divisions and a Cheer Squad. Games begin each Saturday at 9 am and finish around 2 pm. Admission to League games is $3. “We are so excited about the crowds we are seeing at the games. Our community cares so much about their children and our coaches really donate a lot of time and effort,” said Commissioner Greg Scott, “we have a great group of people!” All League games are held at Southampton County High School. “We are so grateful to Southampton County Public Schools for opening their doors and arms to our kids,” added Mr. Scott.

In order to improve player health and safety, the League required all coaches (45) to become certified in USA Heads-up Football and hosted a USA Heads-up Player Safety Coach Clinic in the spring. Additionally, all children attending after-school programs at coinciding practice sites, including players and cheerleaders, are being served healthy C3’s Kid’s Meals at practices and game days through the support of the Virginia Department of Health Child Adult Care Food Program and Franklin/Southampton Charities. For more information on C3’s Kid’s Meals, please visit www.cover3foundation.org.

The League is supported by the NFL Foundation, Franklin/Southampton Charities, USA Football, Riddell All-American, Hubbard Peanut Company, Inc., BB&T Bank, and Spacesaver Solutions, LLC. Additionally, nearly 20 individuals and organizations have donated funds, time, and supplies to the League.

Football Championships are scheduled for November 7. Game times are to be determined. All championship games will be played on the game field at Southampton High School. First and second places will receive team and individual awards. All football and cheer participants will receive a participation medal. Cheerleaders will compete in a competition on October 24 at Southampton Middle School at 11 am. First and second place will receive team and individual awards. The Riverdale Chiefs will also be hosting a BBQ fundraiser at the Cheer Competition. Tickets can be purchased by seeing any Riverdale Chief athlete, coach, or parent or by contacting League Representative and Riverdale Head Coach, Ray Tucker at 757-742-1648. BBQ tickets are $8/quart. Admission to the C3YFCL Cheer Competition is $5 per person.
